With Rangers currently in a state of limbo until we get our new manager (GVB) in, there are a number of questions to be asked about the direction the club and squad will go in, but because we never shirk away from the truth here at Ibrox Noise or feel fear at touching taboo topics, we will ask the question ourselves:

What is the Rangers future of James Tavernier.

The captain is about as divisive a player a we have, with so many fans advocating the selection of Nathan Patterson over the ex-Wigan man, selling the 30-year old, while others rate Tav highly and want him to retain his place.

We want to run the rule over both arguments and hand it over to you to pick your preferred outcome.

In Tav’s favour, we can’t deny the attacking contribution he makes to Rangers – the assists and goals are just spectacular, and in the past month or two, his numbers have soared back to 55 levels. The pressure of Patterson has seen the captain raise his game and the crossing, assists, width and dribbling have all come back to full effectiveness.

If Rangers sold him, that attacking quality would be badly missed, not unlike how Arthur Numan was never truly replaced at LB either, all those years ago.

He’s also been at Ibrox a long time, and while he’s never necessarily sworn himself as a diehard Bear, he’s pretty close and he knows what this club means and the Journey we’ve been through.

Against him is a significant number of arguments as well. Patterson is 10 years younger, and clearly the future. Save for being sold, he WILL be our RB long term, and that’s a reality Tavernier will have to face soon. A new manager will surely choose Patterson due to his higher global profile these days. And of course his evident quality.

There’s also his patchy defending. Others have to cover him marauding into attack, and it means there are doors left open – while Ryan Jack’s return can help close those, Tav’s own defending, while impressive at times, often also leaves a tonne to be desired, being caught off-guard out of position. Tavernier has cost Rangers goals, and that’s a fact.

He’s also lost so much favour with fans on account of his immunity – sure, it was under SG, but it was also the case under the man who signed him too, Mark Warburton. Same under Pedro as well, and even same under Murty. In short, Tavernier seems to have monopolised RB, for good or bad. Right or wrong.

There is of course the compromise. Play both. Steven Gerrard, as usual, lied his pants off when he promised that both of them would play plenty this season, combining them both with Patterson at RB and Tav at RW. It never happened. One of the man’s many fibs.
