A leaked internal memo which Ibrox Noise has seen has suggested Rangers players are mostly content to see Steven Gerrard leave, and thank him for what he gave the club while admitting the squad and system was stale and it was time to move on.

One squad member, who we shall not name, was especially grateful to the ex-boss for restoring a much more appropriate Rangers, but admitted the squad wasn’t a harmonious place any more under Gerrard and the players were on empty under him.

It just points to an era which ran its course, and Gerrard himself knew it as much as anyone.

So when the Villa position came up, and he got the call on Monday, he immediately accepted.

Of course, the part which will follow him forever is that now infamous quote on BT where he derided Emma Dodds with the ‘do I look unsettled don’t ask silly questions’ line which has upset a lot of people and made him look a bit of a liar, if we’re honest.

But internally the players are mostly happy to see a change in leadership, and there’s a sense all round that the SG era was done as soon as we secured 55.

We move on.
