It has to be said, almost everything Gio said in his opening presser was a quietly-veiled threat to the squad, especially to those not pulling their weight.
There is a (justified) feeling from some Rangers fans that Alfredo Morelos, Glen Kamara, Connor Goldson, James Tavernier and Borna Barisic in particular have given something below the expected level of commitment in recent months, and this begs the question of their position now at the club under a new manager who won’t tolerate the passengers his predecessor did.
Does this now mean the end of these ‘empty’ shirts?
We wouldn’t count on it immediately. As Gio said, everyone gets a fresh chance to impress, a tabula rasa as they say, and the lazy wasters who have been so disinterested lately may now get some fresh impetus.
That said, if they couldn’t up their game to impress him on Sunday, will a couple of days of training make any difference?
We would like to think the players who aren’t pulling their weight will find their places heavily under threat, and while we’re not sure fans will get what they want in a completely radical change to the XI, GVB will certainly make his mark for sure with some switches.
In this afternoon’s presser GVB confirms there will be changes, but whether he means personnel or system-wise we can’t yet know.
Probably both. We await with wonder.
