Gerrard to Villa – what we know

Unless you’re planted on the moon, you will be more than aware that the press have gone ballistic for Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa.

Sky Sports, the Daily Mail, Birmingham Live and three highly respected and credible journos from the Telegraph have, between the four of them, confirmed Villa’s move for Gerrard, and his interest in the job.

This doesn’t mean done deal, but Birmingham Live’s Ashley Preece has claimed 100% the deal is done and he’s a verified account with 30K followers. That’s a lot of credibility on the line if he’s wrong.

Sky have stated Gerrard is ‘open’ to the move, while the Daily Mail words it as ‘interested’.

Rangers have unofficially denied any approach has been made to the club by Villa, and Villa have said absolutely nothing.

All we know is Gerrard himself got off at London today via, we believe, Euston, and assistant manager Michael Beale is also said to be there.

Claims are being made this is to work England duty for the international break, but this is a puzzling argument given he’s not done any punditry since leaving BT in 2018. Why would he depart his Rangers duties over the next fortnight to work punditry?

But yes, same question applies to Jermain Defoe too, we suppose, given he bolted south for the same reason and plenty Rangers fans had no issue with that.

Is Stevie leaving for Villa?

As we said from the start, we had more concern over this link than Newcastle, and as we’ve also said, while his ambition is Liverpool, things change in football and maybe he thinks it’s time to move on. To move home to England.

We don’t pretend to be ITK on this, all we know is at this point, he’s the overwhelming favourite to be Villa manager imminently.

We’ll see if that bears fruit.
