Despite huge losses, Rangers still need to work in the transfer market

Despite huge losses, Rangers still need to work in the transfer market

We produced a piece yesterday on why Rangers could look at Bologna’s Aaron Hickey, and the majority of replies suggested we have no money and it was a dumb article.

In truth, we can see the point – Hickey is being monitored by AC Milan and has a market value into £10M.

But we do feel perhaps some readers overlooked the philosophy of our commentary, which is not so much we need to spend £10M we don’t have right now on a Bologna LB, but that our LB position as it stands could be better.

We have Borna Barisic and Calvin Bassey. On paper that seems great. But on the pitch it arguably isn’t.

Barisic’s form is dire at present, and Bassey hasn’t truly long-term proven himself.

So be it Hickey or a January Bosman, there is definitely a sense LB could do with a little spot of maintenance and maybe a fresh face.

Of course, we won’t spend a penny in the next window – we don’t have anything to spend. £25M of losses put paid to that.

But we really did mean Hickey re: next summer and the potential injection of around £50M by winning the SPL. It really is as much as that because of course it nigh-on guarantees CL.

And if Milan haven’t snapped Hickey up during January, Rangers could well have the funds come next summer to make a move, if we want to.

But in January, yes, we will be in the Bosman market alone, and we may have a suggestion or two in the coming weeks of who could make their way into Govan.

Stay tuned…

  1. Let’s get real here everybody. We are in a financial journey that will take a couple of years at least still , to get some form of stability from those dark days . Mr Park Mr King and Mr Taylor set us on the road. We have good real Rangets People now in control , thank you . The plan will be painful and hard but we need to stock to the plan. Ad far as the transferarket goes We need to get smart again and find what we can . We may have to sell at least one or two individuals. Onwards 56.

  2. Signing frees on pre-contract agreements is our only way at the moment, we can make no mistake about that. We would find ourselves in a precarious position financially if Gerrard’s squad fail to deliver 56. Our wage structure is tight so we can only pursue players who are willing to abide by that. Different story perhaps if we were to get £10m+ for maybe the likes of Hagi, Hellander and Kamara but nobody was banging at the door the past few windows. Personally I feel we need to look at the abilities of McCrorie, Mayo, Kelly, Alegria, etc as the B-team and loanees have been doing well in some quarters. The development of Patterson, Bacuna, Sakala, Ofoborh and Simpson could have a big factor in determining our strength in depth plus although both will maybe have their release clauses activated Katic and Itten remain as Rangers players for now. Winning 56 will be the biggest factor in improving our status but until then the purse strings need to be tight and we should be looking at showing some faith in what we have incase the unthinkable happens because should we fail we will be working with the exact policy we have now.
