CONFIRMED: the moment Steven Gerrard knew he was quitting Rangers
Gone but clearly not forgotten!

Steven Gerrard knew on Monday that he was becoming the new Aston Villa manager, and it wasn’t a particularly difficult decision for him – that’s been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, respected journalist who’s been on the ball over the Gerrard story.

Romano claims Gerrard has so much respect for Rangers and our fans, so much so that our information is that the former boss made his decision, left for London and pretty much signed up instantly.

He did not inform his backroom staff until later, and of course did not bother to inform Rangers fans whatsoever.

But he knew on Monday he was leaving Rangers, and fans have been in turmoil for four days over it with so many in denial despite respected and reliable sources confirming it, including, sadly, ourselves.

We were unaware of the phone call on Monday, but we knew he was in London either yesterday or Tuesday, and his backroom staff were in the dark till the past 24 hours too.

Look, we get it, his time in Govan was up – we haven’t been good this season, and the energy from the Gerrard era was fading very patchily, and there is never a good way to carry out a divorce, but that is what’s happened here.

Gerrard got a firm offer from a stable club on Monday, and that was that.

Rangers had clearly granted permission even earlier than Monday for Villa to speak to our former boss – Rangers as a club haven’t handled this terribly well either.

But how do you handle this situation right?

The truth is you can’t.

Because Villa wanted him, Gerrard was put in a position of, for some people, becoming the bad guy.

And maybe he is. Because his decision makes him look a liar and hypocrite, but either way, it’s been known to him for four days.

And that’s about the shape of it.
