If there’s something we’d love to see more of at Ibrox now, it’s a Rangers identity.
Not this is not signing players for the sake of it just because they’re bluenoses – we all know Andy Halliday isn’t good enough to play for Rangers, for example, as much as we love him.
But we do feel a sense of guts and determination in our Bears that perhaps we maybe don’t see from the non-Rangersy players in many cases.
Look at what Allan McGregor, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Nathan Patterson are and have given us. The quality, potential, careers and guts of these guys in a Rangers shirt are unmistakable.
And their being one of us is a big part of that, no question.
There are players who have clearly not been at it for the majority of their time at Rangers and see it as just their job, which is fair enough.
You might disagree on that, but if we compare how much, for example, Ryan Jack leaves on the pitch with how much Glen Kamara does, it’s night and day.
We just want to see more of our own, and it’s clear plenty of them are good enough to be in our shirt. Robby McCrorie, Stephen Kelly – a couple of younger players who clearly have bright futures, and they’re Rangers men.
And of course, with the potential signing of Gio as manager, that trend could already be starting.
We’d love to see that trend – an increase in the number of players in our shirt who know what being Rangers means.
Now, before we get the outraged reaction we did to the ‘Scottish’ issue, we iterate we do want the best players.
And guys like Kent, Aribo, Roofe and Sakala, who aren’t Bears, still give their all when they’re in our shirt, so by no means do we want XI Rangers fans in the side for the sake of being blue.
But we do want to have a bit of a stronger Rangers identity – Greg Docherty, Jordan Jones, Jamie Murphy, Ross McCrorie – all Rangers men, and whether anyone would argue they’re good enough or not, they weren’t really given any chance to prove it one way or another.
We’d like to see that reversed a bit now.
No one gives more in a Rangers shirt than a Rangers fan.
On the one hand you want Rangers minded players while conceding that some players like Kent, Aribo etc are good enough. In other words you just want good players that put the work and the effort in. I totally agree but they don’t need to be “Rangers men”.
