Very very very belatedly, following Rangers’ superb win over Brondby, Ibrox Noise brings you our ratings for a fine night in Govan.

McGregor:

Another shaky night, if we’re honest. Some dodgy kicking and actively rejected Leon Balogun’s plea for support. Didn’t claim the ball or make a single save the whole night. We’re not quite sure what’s up with him these days, it’s not just age – his attitude doesn’t seem as into it right now. Lost his hunger? 6

Tavernier:

For all the criticism he’s had lately, rightly, THIS was the response the captain should be delivering to the competition of Patterson. Some absolutely brilliant crossing, his best for months, and provided the opening assist too. His distribution was excellent and if he keeps up this form, Patterson might struggle to get any minutes. His best performance this season by a distance but does need to watch his position after one or two lapses when he was high let Brondby get behind him. 8

Goldson:

He’s playing pretty much the same match game-in-game-out, but is adding more and more long balls – in his defence, 7 of 17 hit their mark which isn’t bad. Overall passing game was a bit weaker last night, and he got some clearances in, but was exposed a couple of times. Mixed. 6

Balogun:

Once again Rangers’ best CB and his injury is a giant blow. We hope he’s ok for Sunday because he’s the best at the back for the club right now. He was big, strong, keen to tackle and even marauded forward. We don’t even need to mention the brilliant goal. Top night for him, injury aside. 8

Barisic:

Unequivocally poor from the Croat who is simply not earning his place right now. This was a horror from him, and he even gifted Brondby what should have been a goal. He managed a career low of 1 single cross attempt all night, albeit at least it was on point, but he looked completely cut off from this one and we’re not sure what’s up. 4

Davis:

Not magnificent from the veteran, but tidy. He had a lot of the ball but kept it neat. His long ball accuracy was excellent tough, nailing 7 of 9 attempts. 7

Lundstram:

Denied the 6 slot because Davis took it, and it did mean his game was lessened a little. Passing level was the best with a brilliant 97% accuracy, but he wasn’t able to pull the strings so much from where he was. He definitely prefers the deeper slot but still put in a good shift. 7

Aribo:

Wonderful night from the Nigerian, and he was an absolute menace to the Danes. Lots of hard work, graft and plenty of skill, he was back to something like his best and should have had a penalty too. Great night. 9

Hagi:

We got abuse from some quarters for being scathing of the Romanian’s display v Hearts, well last night wasn’t any better. Another mediocre showing from a player who appears to have gained some ego (regardless of his kindness with a young fan) after a world class goal v Germany. Pretty anonymous in this one and rightly removed. 6

Roofe:

Fine goal, fine night of work, and he can be happy with how he played. We really do like this guy these days. 7

Morelos:

Another rank average performance, I’m afraid. He’s saying better things to the press now, but his displays don’t reflect the words. Bit better with the shooting but still wasteful. Doesn’t bully opponents any more and seems to have lost his aggression completely. 5

Subs:

Arfield:

Within seconds he’d nearly scored. Wonderful to see Scotty back. Had a good impact overall. 6

Bacuna:

Didn’t have much time to make impact (but neither did Scotty and he still did so) and was pretty poor with his passing. He’s definitely not settled yet, not even close. 4

Bassey:

Hates CB and it showed, but he didn’t have much to do in fairness. He was ok. 5

Wright:

Reasonable little cameo, and this is how we like him to be used. Impact sub. Solid. 6

Manager:

Steven Gerrard put out a decent XI in truth, but he won’t be thrilled with some of the early defending. He will, however, be delighted that his men followed his game plan so closely and controlled the bulk of this one, earning the two goals and looking pretty cohesive. This was probably our best display of this season and the manager earns the credit for that. 9

  1. Got to say I thought Brondby were really poor but it was a much better performance all round with lots of good individual performances. We definitely tailed off in the second half which remains a concern. Still unable to put games out of reach.
