Despite criticising Alfredo Morelos’ goal return, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard invoked the old Gary Lineker logic in also praising the striker.
Lineker once spoke about misfiring strikers with the following (paraphrased):
And Gerrard today did back Morelos up, saying that while the Colombian isn’t getting enough goals, he is still getting into the right positions to try for them.
A long-forgotten fact about the legendary Ally McCoist is just how many chances he wasted. Because it was so long ago all we see is the ones scored, but his shooting stats were staggering and he missed many, many more than he scored.
But the point was all great strikers do, and would be far more worried if they weren’t getting the shots in in the first place.
Gerrard said:
By saying ‘keeping’ it points out he already is – there’s no denying Morelos’ movement is excellent, and those opportunities never stop for him, but it’s about scoring and at the moment he’s not doing enough of that.
Hopefully it’ll come back soon.
