Steven Gerrard’s confirmation Borna Barisic is to miss at least the next match is less hard to take than it might have been last season.

While we’d never wish injury on any Rangers player, Barisic’s poor form this season (far from alone of course) has seen the rise of Calvin Bassey, who has certainly put in impressive shifts, and many have advocated him as first choice.

His stats on Wednesday were excellent – 7 crossing attempts, 3 nailing it, and a healthy number of tackles and interceptions too. He did the basics well even if he was part of the defence which blundered twice early on.

Short answer – as much as Barisic is a top class player, his absence won’t be a particular hindrance, AKA Glen Kamara whose recent absence wasn’t felt at all.

Stevie needs to shake things up, and we’re not too heartbroken that Barisic is not available for a short while. We do, of course, wish him a speedy recovery, and hope he’s ok from the ‘small issue’ Gerrard quoted him as having, but for the bigger picture, Bassey is just fine.

Maybe a few changes aren’t a bad thing.

  1. I hope he’s thinking same about Katic who has to be recalled ASAP. I agree we need to change how we are approaching games. We are becoming a team that plays in front of our lesser but stubborn opposition. We have to be more incisive more aggressive more deadly. I think we missed an opportunity on Dykes.
