We must admit we’re 50/50 on the new SFA landmark of yearly bans for racism in Scottish football.

On one hand there’s no better deterrent against racial abuse and discrimination than being banned from earning money and carrying out your career for 12 months.

But on the other such a strong punishment has potential for abuse of power, and could see false accusations being used to hurt people who were completely innocent.

Looking at the Kudela Kamara scandal, the chances are 99% that Kudela did indeed bark something vile and racist in Glen’s ear, but the only hard proof we have is Kamara’s word for it.

He’s honest, and he wouldn’t lie, but he might have been mistaken – that’s the 1%.

But under the new Scottish law, Kudela would have been banned for a year – without any real hard proof.

If a bunch of witnesses backed the alleged victim up, or sound mics recorded it, that’s great, and we’ve got our proof.

But when it comes to ‘he said she said’ we’re extremely uncomfortable with a banning system which could cost an innocent person a year of their career because someone either got it wrong or had an agenda against them.

In guilty cases, we’re 100% for it, and even longer than a year is feasible.

But when you cannot be sure, such a justice system is flawed, and could certainly hurt the wrong people.

We hope the authorities think this one through carefully before going ahead with it.
