Few of a Rangers persuasion are unhappy with the outcome yesterday – a massive 3 points, a huge win, and consigning Hibs to their first loss of the domestic campaign.
It showed guts, heart and a much better level of pure work rate from most of the players, even if a few still had off days, and demonstrated the fire may still be in the belly after all, which will please Steven Gerrard greatly.
However, very little has been said about the influence Ryan Porteous’ moment of madness had on the match, and we must be realistic that the home side losing Scott Allan as well as Porteous made Rangers’ life a lot easier, albeit the Famous still struggled against 10 men.
There is no doubting how hard we worked yesterday, breaking them down, never giving up, and an infinitely more ‘Rangersy’ and gutsy showing.
But it still took 45 minutes for Rangers to find an equaliser, with Porteous’ absence a major contributor to the comical hole in Hibs’ defence which freed Kemar Roofe to head home.
We’re not saying Rangers didn’t deserve the win, we absolutely did – but the rash tackle and red card cost the visitors a tonne, and it lost them their biggest creative outlet in Allan as well as their best defender in Porteous.
What are we saying? When we face Hearts in two weeks, that will be more than telling about where we are. We’re not sure how accurately we can measure the turnaround v Hibs when they basically lost their two best players having had the best of the match till then.
This one showed we have heart again, even if the quality wasn’t abundant. But we must equally show the ability to do it with that level of balls when we face eleven men.
But those guts are a real real start.
Keep it up, Rangers.
