We haven’t yet really covered the absolute shocker for Ryan Porteous, who got roundly condemned by pretty much everyone for his diabolically rash challenge on Joe Aribo.

Rightly sent off, on first glance the Hibs defender seemed to have cleanly won the ball in a hard but fair challenge, only for referee Nick Walsh to immediately brandish the red card.

And this is a rare occasion a ref was bang on and showed why they do the job that we complain about, as replays showed Porteous’ trailing foot was far far too high and caught Aribo on the shin.

The Nigerian required treatment and could have lost his entire season to a broken leg from that one.

From what everyone in the game says, Porteous is a genuinely decent guy – Neil McCann and Kevin Thomson both backed up his character as a result of this challenge, but both roundly condemned the tackle as dangerous and completely deserving of the sending off.

It seems Porteous is a truly nice bloke, but has a really ugly nasty streak that appears on the pitch, a reckless mentality that turns him temporarily into a bad egg.

This incident could have cost us a valuable player, and thankfully it seems no resulting harm was done, but Porteous, only 22 years of age, is on the right side of youth that he can iron this part of his game out.

He’s been there before with Rangers, with some nasty challenges in the past, notably on Coulibaly, so this is far from unprecedented.

If Jack Ross doesn’t coach this out of him, Porteous will end someone’s career before long.
