Steven Gerrard to Newcastle remains in the press, for the very simple reason it’s driving traffic and gaining clicks.

Gerrard has already 99% ruled himself out of the job by confirming he’s happy at Ibrox, but in fairness he didn’t outright say no.

When we look at what his ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said:

“One hundred per cent. I have got a contract until 2025, I absolutely love being here. I’m very fortunate. I’ve got a great chief executive and a director of football who I have a close relationship with and a group of players that I really, really enjoy working with. We have an infrastructure here that allows us to look to compete, so as long as they don’t want to move me then I’m very happy being here at the club.”

He clearly says no, and he’s staying at Leicester.

But Gerrard wasn’t quite as equivocal, admitting the Newcastle situation ‘intrigued’ him, but would only say otherwise that he wasn’t interested in getting involved in speculation over that job because he had too much respect for Steve Bruce:

“I’m in a very big job, a very big role, which I’m very much focused on.”

It certainly wasn’t as clear-cut as Rodgers’ statement where he stated he’s simply not leaving unless he’s told to. But it was still clear – he’s focused on Rangers.

His ex-team mate Steve McManaman said if Newcastle offered him the job he wouldn’t turn it down, while Peter Crouch suggested he’d be making a big mistake leaving Rangers for the north.

But either way that’s all just speculation – and the story continues to circulate.

The latest development has Eddie Howe now in pole position to get the gig, with claims Newcastle are not keen on poaching a manager in work.

Either way, until a manager is found, expect Gerrard’s name in the headline, driving traffic.

Just how it works.
