Filip Helander has been confirmed as missing for potentially months as Stevie announced the Swede has had surgery and could be a long-term absentee.
The former Malmo man had a nasty knock v St Johnstone and the look on his face told its own story, but after scans the past week and surgery, Gerrard has revealed the grim outlook and could be facing into next year without the defender.
It’s the blow we expected, sadly, albeit the crumb of comfort is that it’s not overtly been confirmed as a season-ender, which was the initial reaction.
Equally though that cannot be ruled out, and Helander is certainly out for the ‘foreseeable’ as Gerrard put it, and that’s a massive blow for the club to lose one of its most valuable assets.
It means Rangers are certainly down a defender and options there are a little thin unfortunately.
Recall for Niko Katic, anyone?
It shows the folly of letting Katic go and he must be recalled in January.
I suspect this will be close to season ending by the time he returns and is slowly brought back to a level he can safely compete at.
