Let’s not underestimate the gravity of Filip Helander’s potential injury. Stevie G is waiting on a diagnosis over the next 24-48 hours, and we’re all praying for good news, because otherwise Rangers are down arguably our best defender (albeit he did struggle at McDiarmid) and have just Goldson, Balogun and Simpson to do us till January.

Having lost one defender through an ACLI in Katic, Rangers do not want to lose as pivotal a stopper as Helander to a nasty knee issue, but unfortunately the Swede’s face spoke a picture yesterday and usually a player knows when it’s a serious one.

So what’s the worst-case scenario? Depending on how long Helander could be sidelined for, this could be a season-ender, and we hope not, of course, but if it is, you can guarantee one of two things:

1: Niko Katic’s return in January
2: A new body comes in that window instead

But until then we’re in a bit of bother, because frankly the defensive options aren’t the most inspiring. We have contract rebel Connor Goldson who just refuses to sign a new deal, we have Leon Balogun who cannot be relied on for fitness. And Jack Simpson who’s hardly won fans over with stellar defensive displays.

It’s not an ideal scenario at the best of times, and all we can do right now is cross our fingers and hope for good news from this scan.

Rangers’ defence hasn’t been great this season, and losing arguably the best component of it would be very hard to deal with.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

  1. Agree Hellander is when fit our best pure defender. Bassey is another option , with Barasic regaining his place. Simpson doesn’t look like he wants to be here . I hate to say I told you so but Katic decision and to a lesser extent Patterson will be down to SG . Let’s hope he’s able to return soon.
