The Scotsman’s Martyn Simpson is set to receive the wrath of Celtic fans after the journo became a rare breed of media folk to promote Rangers over Celtic.
In his ‘market value’ article, Simpson collates Dutch stats website transfermarkt’s supposed values for players and amalgamates them all in a ‘who has the most valuable squad’ article.
For avoidance of doubt, Rangers tonk Celtic here, at £93.28M compared with £59.18M.
Now, it must be borne in mind said website undervalues most players, with, for example Nathan Patterson only at £1.17M when we know officially he’s worth well in excess of £10M.
So £93.78M is definitely not the absolute value of Rangers’ squad.
But for a journo to nevertheless publish a piece that puts Rangers above Celtic in value and lucrativeness is certainly brave in these times, and shows some hacks are willing to show integrity and honesty and not just grovel to their paymasters.
In fairness, the Scotsman has always been relatively fair between both clubs, rarely obviously siding one way or the other. If an aspect of either club is plugged, it’s because it’s factual, not based on bias.
And on this occasion it’s Rangers to benefit.
