This morning’s stories over Connor Goldson returning for Thursday are based on complete guesswork and the need for clicks.
Goldson has been in isolation, coming out of it only yesterday, and is a little off match fitness, obviously having been unable to fully train, so while our understanding is he’s available, he remains a doubt for tomorrow.
The chances are, of course, that the stopper will be restored to his place, given the fact that short of a broken leg he will play, but the press stating factually that he’s going to play is simply guesswork and not based on absolute facts.
Stevie will confirm in today’s presser one way or the other whether Goldson stands a chance of starting, and it would certainly ease some of the pressure on the rearguard if he and Balogun were able to team up.
That duo is ok, if not spectacular, and whether it can handle Lyon is far less clear, but it’s better than Simpson and Balogun for sure.
But we don’t know it’s what we have at our disposal. All guesswork at this point.
But then, since when did the press ever do anything else?
Goldson has missed a game and a couple of training sessions. If his level of fitness can’t cope with that then serious questions should be asked. He’ll play. The rest might even have done him some good.
