Belatedly, we wanted to put up our scores for yesterday’s ultimately decent win over Livi. Who was our MOTM and who struggled?

McLaughlin:

Had absolutely literally zero to do. Few kicks here and there, and that was it. Might as well have had his deckchair out. n/a

Tavernier:

Wasn’t tested defensively at all, but attack wise was very much at the races. Will be pleased with his crossing and running and his double assist summed up a fine day. 8

Goldson:

Used the ball well, and got in a lot of successful defensive work. For all the hoo hah over his contract, it’s not affecting his performances. Fine display. 8

Balogun:

Reasonable day at the office for the big Nigerian who got in a decent score of interceptions even if he had one slightly off-key mix up with his partner. 7

Bassey:

Has shed a lot of weight and gained muscle instead – he looks a completely different player, and on this showing is more than capable of playing for this club. Sure, his crossing wasn’t spectacular, but he was very involved and he’s evolved entirely. He’ll be delighted with this performance. 8

Davis:

Another sumptuous showing from a player we truly do consider world class. Davis is Rolls Royce and we’re lucky to have him. No one on the pitch had more of the ball. 9

Kamara:

A neat and tidy performance from Kamara with a superb 97% passing, but it wasn’t exactly going forward much. He just kept things ticking. 7

Aribo:

Three matches out for Joe showed and he was just a little bit behind the pace. He lacked no hunger though and got involved as much as possible, just a bit shy of some match fitness. 7

Kent:

Angry and energetic showing from Kent eager to hit the ground running, Showed a lot of pace and trickery and could have scored a few as well. A bit wasteful on that front. Bright. 8

Hagi:

Was dragging a lot of players around and took his goal very well (with the aid of a small deflection) and his injury was untimely and may have contributed to the lull. Bright start and unfortunate to have to go off. 8

Sakala:

Debut to forget for the Zambian. Miles off it. 5

Subs:

Wright:

Another hungry showing from Wright, and his goal had shades of Durrant in 92. He is making it harder for Stevie to leave him out. 8

Lundstram:

Looks the part, he really does. Strong, bold, and not scared of the SPL, the ex-Sheffield man fit in perfectly. 8

Roofe:

In truth he did absolutely nothing apart from score the final goal. Still, that’s all he needed to do. 7

Manager:

Steven Gerrard was happy with the result and some of the performance, but not the big lull. He will be happy with how his not-quite-first-choice XI were far too good for a potentially tricky opponent, but he’ll be disappointed with new signing Fashion Sakala’s ineffectiveness. Defence was pleasing though, and there’s a lot of good to be had from a 3-0 win to start the new season. 7
