We held back on mentioning this as it seemed too negative at the time and would have (understandably) have been slaughtered, but after Connor Goldson’s appalling piece of complacency and arrogance today as he just let Nicky Clark take the ball following laziness from Rangers’ vice captain, we’re going to call it out and let you decide if we’re being too harsh.

From Goldson’s press conference on Friday:

“I’m not sure, there’ll be injuries, form, who the gaffer selects for certain games, but I’ve said this before I’m used to playing with all of them now. You’ve seen with pre-season I’ve played with all of them and now at the start of the season two different partners. We’ve been together now for long enough to have an understanding with each other so I’m happy with whoever plays.”

To paraphrase the question, he was asked if he needs a wider understanding of all the other defenders in order to be at his best in individual matches.

And what was missing from Connor’s answer?

Humility.

At no point did our captain show modesty and use the phrase ‘if I’m selected’ or ‘if the gaffer picks me’.

No, Goldson now takes for granted that HE plays, if he’s fit, and that arrogance disappointed us at the time, and seeing his rather mince display today as he disrespected Nicky Clark who made him look like an idiot is deeply worrying.

We know Stevie has his favourites, his untouchables – always has, and most managers are similar.

But usually even those players will still be humble about it and talk with grace about the possibility of being selected.

Not Goldson. He now expects to play and it really is all about who partners him. We know that is the case, yes, but for him to say it himself was not the kind of dignity we expect from a Ranger.

And today he looked damn foolish for it.

Poor.

  1. I fail to see what he thinks he is , we brought him back to a top level. If not for Rangers he would be playing EFL Championship . Let’s hope someone’s thinking of buying him .
