“Not capable – 4” – Rangers players ‘slated’ after CL exit

A difficult night for Rangers as the CL dream was taken away – how did the players fare on an evening to forget?

McGregor:

It’s by a distance the worst he’s played since his return. Naïve handling of the ball outside the box could have led to worse than just a yellow, and for all his experience, he looked like a rabbit in headlights. McGregor at his best would have been capable of a worldie save for the first, just like in Praha. 4

Tavernier:

Getting a lot of stick for dreadful crossing and rightly so, Tavernier contributed absolutely nothing and got away with a diabolical/inexplicable run out of position on 49 minutes leaving Connor Goldson exposed – nothing came of that one, but the captain was indicted as not capable at this level, unfortunately. 4

Goldson:

His poor season continues – did very little as a defensive unit and his distribution was horrendous to non-existent. Not strong in the air, and shown up quite a lot. 4

Balogun:

Horror night for the Nigerian – completely at fault for at least one goal, the ex-Wigan man was a surprise selection and it wasn’t vindicated. 3

Barisic:

Put in a couple of reasonable crosses but was a total passenger otherwise. Hard to even notice him. 4

Davis:

The previously-dependable Davis was having yet another off-night, loose possession and this time wasn’t really working back to defend. 5

Arfield:

Worked hard as he could but clearly not fit and unable to exert influence on the match in any form. 3

Aribo:

One or two bright early moments but faded badly as the match went on. 4

Kent:

Oh Christ. 3

Wright:

Was shown up at this level as miles below the quality Rangers need to improve. He was a £300,000 fringe player for Aberdeen for God’s sake and he’s looking like one. But he does work very hard. 4

Morelos:

To say he was by far and away Rangers’ best performer is putting it mildly. Whether he meant that goal or not, he was a dog with a bone. Lots of strong hold up play, good skill, and won a few fouls, he was by a catatonic mile Rangers’ best player. 7

Subs:

Sakala:

Runs about a lot but doesn’t really look like he knows where he’s going. Did have one decent wee dribble behind the defence in his… well… defence. 4

Manager:

This is a difficult one. Gerrard picked an unfit team for the third match in a row, and too many passengers cost him dearly. Fans leapt on the ‘favouritism’ angle but these had been players to bail him out in the UEL so he was loyal to them. They did not repay that loyalty. Once again showed inability to deliver a good half time team talk, and no one can understand why he dropped Helander for Balogun. It wasn’t a great team selection and fans can be forgiven for questioning him a bit now. 4

  1. Captain fantastic isn’t anymore, time for young legs . The defence is slow and this dangerous passing at the back is for teams with skill. The midfield are pushing the strikers into to tight spot in stead of feeding them early. The way forward is solid defence first.

  2. Stevie g team selection was poor .also tactics why were pumping high balls into a tall defence we cnt shoot around box or outside it without getting total brainfreeze and as for the goals well a totalshambles tav n goldson not gd enough thy cnt defend i feel srry for supporters tht paid gd money to watch tht performance
