There is no question John Lundstram is the best signing Steven Gerrard has made yet as Rangers manager.
Now, that’s a bold statement, yes, and some might say emotionally knee-jerk. After all, he got Davis, McGregor, Defoe, Arfield, Barisic, Kent, and of course Glen Kamara. Not to mention Aribo.
However, for age, value, quality, and CV, Lundstram is by a distance the best the manager has brought in. Here’s why:
Lundstram is just 27, and we already know what we’re getting. For free. Davis is aging, along with Defoe and McGregor. Arfield was near the wrong side of 30. Barisic was a fairly unknown quantity. Kent cost a tonne. Glen Kamara we couldn’t have known how good he’d turn out, and it took some time. Aribo also took a while.
In Lundstream we have a ready-to-go top class PL midfielder at just 27 (only turned it in February), at the perfect age, who’s completely free and widely-regarded as one of the most lucrative Bosmans this summer.
Is this the Hollywood ‘big signing’ we’ve been waiting for from Stevie G?
It’s by far the closest.
We all know the guy, we know the CV, we know where he’s played, how proven he is, and how many clubs wanted him this summer.
This is a player we could justifiably have paid up to £15M for, and to get him for free?
It’s a truly superb capture.
And Lundstram has admitted the CL and the manager were the biggest two carrots for him, which is fair enough – Rangers are a massive draw but we’re always held back by the SPL. It’s not attractive for anyone. But Stevie and the CL are, and the calibre of signing just took a massive hike with the addition of Lundstram.
Is it a game-changer? Well, you might argue the game already changed last season. And it did. But this is the kind of quality we need for the CL, and now we’ve got a major signing to equip us for dealing with that.
So yes, it’s a game-changer. This is now the calibre of player we can aspire to.
Good start for the summer we must say.
