Niko Katic might be fit again but his absence from the squad v Arsenal was very telling. The big Croat, thoroughly loved by the Rangers faithful, has never been truly able to hold a place down at Ibrox, losing his slot to both Joe Worrall and then Filip Helander, before injury destroyed his 55.
And now that he’s completely fit again, has been totally AWOL from every friendly squad Rangers have had, numbering three now. And what was even more revealing was both Jack Simpson and George Edmundson were on the bench at the weekend with Katic nowhere to be seen.
12 substitutes and Katic couldn’t get in among them.
That was his comments on the topic on the 4th of this month, but 3 friendlies later he’s not been on the bench for any of them.
Katic is ready, according to him. He’s clearly not match fit, because you can only get that playing matches, but evidently the Croat believes he’s ready to go.
And yet he’s not been seen in any of the fixtures this pre-season.
There’s been a tonne of rumours about a loan move for him, and with both Simpson and Edmundson ahead of him v Arsenal that may hold some water.
But a fully-fit Niko is a prize asset, and a top class defender, and we’d love to see him back soon.
