£15M, £30M and Rangers’ summer budget…

Earlier this summer Ibrox Noise suggested how Steven Gerrard needed to spend £30M in order to upgrade the squad to CL competitive level.

Curiously, Rangers have signed a £5M player (Fashion Sakala) and a £10M player (John Lundstram) for a combined total of £0.

See, it’s not about actually spending a literal £30M, it’s about getting in players of that gravity, that quality, whether they cost money or not.

These guys are worth a market value around the £15M range combined, and Rangers have them for nothing. There’s also a boatload of potential value in Nnamdi Oboforh.

If there’s one thing Steven Gerrard has been a master of, it’s getting in some absolutely pearling Bosmans.

Allan McGregor, Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara (might as well have been), Scott Arfield and many others have been free additions while having, in many places, genuine market value.

But that’s ramped up a big notch with some major players in the form of the Zambian and former Utd man. There are also high hopes for Ofodorh.

So while Rangers haven’t actually spent a penny this transfer window as yet, we doubt there’s a fan unhappy with what we’ve seen arriving in Govan.

Because although we’ve not spent £15M, we didn’t have to.

  1. We don’t need to spend huge sums to get good players. Our financial position while much improved is still a concern. What if we didn’t do well in Europe this season? With better players arriving our wage bill gets bigger each year. We have much work to do to the stadium. We are stilling feeling the harm done by Covid. Even if we get big money for Morelos or Kamara it doesn’t mean we have to go out and spend it.
