The press stories from Colombia/Portugal alleging that Alfredo Morelos has turned down Porto for a crack at the CL with Rangers make absolutely no sense.
They say the temptation of Europe’s premier club competition is too tempting for him to resist, but we have a real problem with this.
First off, Rangers are in the third round qualifiers – we don’t have secured group stage entry just yet.
Secondly, Porto ARE in the group stage – they’re guaranteed it already.
If Morelos wants a better league, guaranteed CL group football plus higher wages, Porto is clearly far too tempting.
Rangers, while we may or may not be a bigger club than Portugal’s giants, cannot offer good domestic football, massive wages or indeed guaranteed CL football.
Therefore why the Colombian or indeed Portuguese press are claiming the carrot of CL at Ibrox is too much to resist when Porto have it as well, and indeed at group stage, really is bewildering.
Morelos certainly has a decision to make – apparently he’s agreed the terms with the Dragao side, and it’s down now to the clubs to agree on a fee.
Whether that will happen we couldn’t tell you, but one thing is certain:
The reasons the Latin press are giving for him to stay don’t add up.
