Rangers must make a summer move for the SPL’s rising star central midfielder Alistair (Ali) McCann and hijack Celtic’s interest in him.
The 21-year old, so outstanding in both Rangers’ recent fixtures against Callum Davidson’s men, is under contract till 2023 but wouldn’t cost the earth to secure, and is clearly one of the most promising young midfielders in the country who doesn’t appear to divide Rangers fans in the way Lewis Ferguson does.
A product of the Saints’ academy, the excellent young engine room man already has not only 61 career appearances in the SPL, but a stunning two caps for his country, Northern Ireland, lending weight to the argument this is a real player who models himself on Steven Davis.
McCann’s market value is sub-£1M and there’s no question he’s certainly good enough to get a promotion from McDiarmid Park, and we have little doubt he’ll have impressed manager Steven Gerrard during both of the recent clashes with his side.
He’s not a big goalscorer, with just 6 in 82 appearances, but he’s very much on Celtic’s radar, and this talented mid would be far better served at Ibrox than Celtic Park.
Of course, the great irony is in previous seasons players like he would choose Rangers over Celtic because of a much better chance of getting playing time at Ibrox given our lower previous standards, but these days it’s at Celtic someone like McCann probably stands a better chance of making an impression.
Still, he’s one we should look at. Especially given the midfield issues we’ve been talking about.
