Steven Gerrard has dropped his biggest hint yet that Rangers are making serious moves for Oostende’s Fashion Sakala and Heerenveen’s Joey Veerman by failing to reject speculation on the pair when asked.
As Ibrox Noise regulars will know, the manager has a very specific way of dealing with the press when it comes to transfer stories, and always dismisses outright any links which aren’t true.
Anything which has substance, however, he becomes cryptic on and doesn’t deny the speculation.
On Sakala and Veerman he said:
“There were couple of names a week before and a week before that. If there’s anything to say in terms of ins and outs, I will be the first to tell you. We are tracking certain individuals to try and make the group stronger when the window opens. I don’t think it’s the right time to mention individual names or targets that we’re looking at.”
This is Gerrard-talk for ‘yes, we’re interested but we cannot and will not speak about ongoing negotiations.’
The pair are certainly high quality and with Rangers refusing to rest on the laurels of 55 and a stunning run in the Europa League, work has begun in earnest at preparing the squad for the assault on 56, at bringing in top-class players to strengthen the playing personnel.
There’s no denying these two would be major additions.
