Rangers fans today posited, again, Allan McGregor for MOTM. A few had insisted on this around January, but nowhere near in the numbers they now are.

Indeed, in an Ibrox Noise poll, Steven Davis was the runaway winner earlier in the season, with Greegsy a decent second place.

If we ran the poll again, the likelihood of it being flipped around is major.

But why, why has McGregor gone up so much the past few months, what is it that stood out?

Well, the reality is McGregor had a pretty quiet first half of the season – Rangers had most of the ball, and the defence was barely tested at times. He still came into action, don’t get me wrong, but his level of involvement was modest.

Then January happened. What happened in January? Rangers’ form plummeted. While we mostly continued to win, our displays dipped aggressively, in the traditional new year lull, and guys like James Tavernier, sensational till Yuletide, just stopped performing.

And this meant that McGregor was far more called into action than he’d been before.

He was making match-winning saves, game-winning performances, and there’s no coincidence all his memorable moments this season are all from the past 4 months, give or take.

In short, while Steven Davis has had a gloriously consistent and outstanding season from the beginning, McGregor’s level has shot up to an astounding degree this year in keeping with how he’s been more needed by the defence.

It means both players are brilliant, and Rangers fans have a hell of a job picking their POTY.

Tavernier? Sadly he’s probably pipped now – his stunning displays ceased around January and he wasn’t able to lift it – then of course the injury. If it was just till the turn of the year, he’d be our POTY, by a distance.

But since January, McGregor has been remarkable, just like Davis, and fans will have one hell of a time picking their best of the season.

Great problem to have really.

  1. McGregor had a good match yesterday but on the day Davis was once again superb and better. But actually on the day I wouldn’t have given the MOTM to either. For me Aribo and Kent were the match winners who tormented Ceptic all day.
