Last night Rangers made another pioneering announcement when they became the first Scottish club to truly take the fight against racism to the next step by boycotting social media for a week.
True, some English clubs/players have already done this, and good on them, but Scottish clubs lagged somewhat behind.
However by making this bold step, Rangers have made a massive statement – against UEFA, Slavia, and against social media companies.
The power of Rangers to stay silent on the biggest platform players and indeed famous people have is a huge coup, a real and tangibly strong statement of resolve, and it will hurt a lot of websites in particular who rely on social media posts from players for traffic.
But of course, it’s not about them.
It’s about Rangers players, particularly the black ones, being abused on a daily basis without any recriminations – receiving repeated messages of hate, slurs, disparaging insults and the rest of it – it’s time this stopped.
And if the only way to stop it is the power of silence, then we completely endorse and support the club’s stance on this.
Kick it out.
