Rangers are in advanced stages to complete the Bosman signing of Oostende’s Fashion Sakala, a 24-year old Zambian striker whose numbers in Belgium have been certainly impressive this season.
The former Spartak Moscow forward has had a very decent campaign in the Jupiler, with 13 in 28 making his services coveted as his contract winds down.
He’s played 5 times for his country but never scored, and aged 24 his career stats are decent but not stunning; 41 goals in 136 appearances, and with just 10 assists, Sakala is one who has only started to blossom in the past season.
He is an outright striker, a pure number 9 and he is being signed very much with the departures of Cedric Itten and particularly Alfredo Morelos in mind, with Rangers hoping to secure another brilliant low-cost gem like the Colombian who can grow in value down the line.
This imminent signing does seem to be more of a replacement for Morelos than anything else, with the current number 9 still intending to leave – Stevie might be able to hang onto most of his assets, but the ex-HJK man does still appear hellbent on getting his move.
The scouts and management have watched enough of Sakala to know he’s worth bringing in, and given the success of the past season, we will happily blindly trust them with regards new additions going forward.
Hopefully if Sakala does get secured, he turns into an astonishing bargain.
On paper he seems a prospect and looks like he could handle the SPFL. Let’s hope we get him for the bargain quoted.
