We are going to be covering this story with care and not adding fuel to any rumours, but we definitely do wonder what Graeme Souness was referring to with that quote on Sky Sports last Sunday.

The hint, following breaking news in the Sky studio of Rangers winning 55, was that he was thrilled for his old team, remained resolutely a Bear himself, but spared a word or two ‘for my old pal’ Walter Smith who was in his thoughts for ‘a different reason’.

Souness and Walter are absolute best friends, with a huge respect for each other and a relationship which goes back to the mid-80s.

They are hugely admired in Scottish football, and indeed throughout Britain, so it was fitting that Graeme name checked Walter, who we know has given Stevie G a tonne of counselling and advice during the past three years, so we’re well aware of Sir Walter’s quiet contribution to 55.

We’ve also seen the rumours on social media and if we hear anything concrete about what you’re all talking about, we will of course bring it to you.

But until then, no matter what, Walter will always be a massive icon to us, and a hero in our hearts. If one man symbolises Rangers the past 30 years, if not more, it’s Walter.

We wish him well always.
