The astonishing £31M ‘secret’ about Stevie G’s Rangers

Transfer window in summer 2020, leading into this season:

Parkhead:

Seven players signed at a cost of around £12M, including loan players.

Ibrox:

10 players signed at a cost of around £12M, including one loan.

Celtic, of course, had already built a squad for megamillions over the past 5-10 years (anywhere up to about £100M has been spent since 2012 we’d wager, excluding last year), while Steven Gerrard has had, in total, around £31M in two and a half seasons.

He built a squad pretty much from scratch, and the only surviving players from previous regimes to still be part of his unit are James Tavernier, Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos – combined cost of £1.1M.

Instead, Gerrard, in 30 months, has had a fraction of the time and money that Celtic have had, and has not only matched them in every area of the pitch, but gone miles beyond.

Rangers have the best goalie, defenders, fullbacks, midfielders and attack.

Our manager’s big spends? Kemar Roofe (£4M), Cedric Itten (£2.5M), Connor Goldson (£3M), Filip Helander (£3M) and Ryan Kent (£7.5M).

Everyone else is either £2M or a tiny modest cost/free.

And yet? If Rangers hadn’t been so incredible this season, Celtic would be the champions. They would be praising their players, their expensive squad for being worth the money, and they’d be toasting another (fake) title by Neil Lennon.

But no, as soon as Rangers actually showed up, well managed and well drilled, with modest sums to spend (and still not a significant penny made in transfers, incidentally, since 2012) Celtic just fell apart.

Indeed, does anything else show what a fraud this Celtic has actually been the past 10 years – sailing to easy league wins because there was no Rangers to challenge – as soon as there was a proper one, they have collapsed like a house of cards.

And yet, that proper one, that serious Rangers only needed £31M in two and a half years to completely supplant Celtic.

The last time that happened?

2007 – Walter spent £30M over those 3 or so years and made Rangers the best in Scotland by a mile – surpassing WGS’s Celtic and destroying them, pure and simple.

Gerrard has done the same again, with the same amount of money.

And remember, £30M now doesn’t buy you half as much as it did 14 years ago.

What Gerrard has done is spectacular.

He’s delivered on his promises and then some.
