Rangers today have again been linked with former Dundee Utd and Sporting star Ryan Gauld, who is having a much better time of it in Portugal’s top tier the past two seasons.

The 25-year old attacking midfielder is out of contract this summer but has been excelling for Farense this term and last, with a total of 14 goals and 7 assists in 38 outings, which is definitely a better level than his struggles during his time at Sporting (technically for the B side, he only featured 5 times for the seniors).

He did of course return to the SPL with Hibs for a while, in an ill-fated spell which yielded little, but back in Portugal he’s now hitting what can easily be described as his career peak.

Is he good enough for Rangers?

Well, his struggles with Hibs suggest he’s not exactly one for thriving in the SPL, and while we can point to his younger days with Dundee Utd and how good he was for them, it was a long time ago when he was 18. A different world.

He has also never been capped at national level.

His link to Rangers has seen a bit of a divisive response, but the reality is Rangers have two outstanding internationals in Joe Aribo and the ever-improving Ianis Hagi in that slot, not to mention the wonderful Scott Arfield who is still only just past the wrong side of 30.

Rangers’ need for another high-quality AM probably isn’t that high, but Gauld would be a free so while we could do worse, it wouldn’t be a signing we feel we desperately need.

But as always, it falls to Stevie to make that call.
