English journos have trolled Brendan Rodgers by asking him if he’s ready to give Steven Gerrard help in the last 16 v Slavia Prague.
The Northern Irish manager, impressive domestically with Swansea, Liverpool, Celtic and now Leicester, has never been able to really cope with European competition, failing at Anfield, Parkhead and recently at Leicester, but it didn’t stop English hacks taking the proverbial out of him by asking him if he was ready to advise Rangers and his former charge.
Of course, what is being overlooked here by some outlets claiming there’s some axe to grind between Rodgers and Gerrard, is the simple reality that Rodgers was well-beaten by Slavia and so he would be as much use to Gerrard as a chocolate teapot on this one.
He is a fine manager, but only domestically – in Europe he is, to put not too fine a point on it, a complete career failure who has never done better in Europe than the last 32 of the UEL. For any club.
So why on earth Gerrard would want his help is of course nothing more than journos trolling the former Celtic boss on his hapless failure again and rubbing salt into the wound by making him say Gerrard would clearly not need his help.
Which is exactly what he said.
How stupid would Rodgers have been to say he’s on the end of the line if Stevie needs him when Stevie has completely destroyed his European record two seasons in a row?
No, the journos definitely enjoyed that one…
