“A new Connor Goldson” – Jack Simpson arrives…
The other new lad....

We had a look earlier at new signing Scott Wright, and while we’re not blown away by the addition, we’re cautiously optimistic Stevie can get the best from the new lad.

And with that in mind, we have a similar look at Jack Simpson, the 24-year old defender also hooking up long term.

Now, there’s a caveat:

Simpson was a panic addition, in terms of getting him sown up now. He was to come in the summer, but Edmundson’s exit and the confirmation Katic is to remain sidelined till at least the middle of the year hiked up the need to get in a fourth CB pronto.

Enter Simpson, who arrived immediately and not later this year.

He was one we had monitored for some time, so it’s not like it was a lucky dip and panic to sign a random CB now. This was a guy we had on the radar, and had been looking into securing anyway.

But his arrival now is to replace men and streamline the options.

In truth, the lad looks a decent acquisition.

11 outings at Premier League level in England, 9 in the Championship, the kid has been flirting with breaking through at that kind of level for a good season or more, but he’s just not been given favour with the Cherries with Chris Mepham preferred (he’s a £10M Wales international defender btw) instead.

So he’s now a Ranger.

What can we expect?

He’s a big lad at 6ft 2, and his play style is very similar to Connor Goldson, but he didn’t quite crack Bournemouth consistently enough and was overlooked more often than not.

At 23 he needs first team football and while he’s developed a fair bit, he needs more senior football to continue that.

He might not be the best at reading play yet, a bit like Leon Balogun, but at only 23 there’s plenty time for the Goldsons and others to help coach him.

He is a very, very good addition for depth purposes, and is undeniably a replacement for both Edmundson and Katic long term.

We have good hopes for him, and his CV bodes promisingly.

Hopefully we’ll see a lot of him as time goes on.
