Like many Rangers fans, I did not believe the league was over at the point it was called last season. I decided to do some research recently on what would have happened if the league was allowed to play to conclusion, with Rangers and Celtic in the same form as they began the 2020-2021 season. The findings were very interesting.

Celtic had 3 games to play before the split when last season was called:
Rangers (a)
St Johnstone (h)
Hibs (a)

  • Their first league game away to Rangers this season was 2nd January and they lost 1-0
  • Their first league game at home to St Johnstone was 6th December and they drew 1-1
  • Their first league game away to Hibs was 21st November and they drew 2-2.

Meanwhile, Rangers had 4 games pre-split when the season was called:

St Johnstone (h)
Celtic (h)
St Mirren (a)
Motherwell (h)

  • Our first league game at home to St Johnstone this season was 12th August and we won 3-0
  • Our first league game at home to Celtic was 2nd January and we won 1-0
  • Our first league game away to St Mirren was 30th December and we won 2-0
  • Our first league game at home to Motherwell was 19th December and we won 3-1.

The result?

Had both teams concluded last season in the same form as we began the current one, we would have gone into the split only 3 points behind Celtic.

And here’s the real kicker – the only fixture we would have been guaranteed after the split last season was away to Celtic.

We played Celtic away from home on the 17th October… And I think you all know who won that.

  1. Stats are an amazing thing. We were 13 points behind with 9 games remaining and a game in hand with 2 Old Firm games to play. Of course had we won those games we would’ve been only 4 points behind. On that basis it was wrong to hand the title to them. But the reality was we were in a rotten run of form having recently lost to Kilmarnock and Hamilton (at home), drawn with St Johnstone and Aberdeen and been knocked out of the cup by soon to be relegated Hearts. Even the games we won were done so with a huge struggle, e.g. Ross County 1-0, Stranraer 2-0.
Meanwhile Ceptic were returning the kind of numbers that we’ve produced this season. So I think it highly unlikely we could’ve turned round that 9 point deficit.
Although what the stats do demonstrate is that had we been in any kind of decent form we would’ve stayed in the chase and the league would’ve probably been settled by the Old Firm games.
