Rangers’ January efforts in the transfer market have stepped up after Netherlands’ Gustavo Hamer appeared as a target for acquisition.

The 23-year old Dutch U20 international, currently at Championship Coventry, is a defensive midfielder, and Rangers’ potential interest in him could point to a number of avenues, which we’ll get to in a moment, but for now, is he any good?

For someone of his age, his number of career appearances is outstanding at 190, so this kid can definitely play a bit.

He’s also extremely experienced in the Dutch top flight with 50 outings at that level so we’re not talking an inexperienced lad here.

As for the implications, well they are significant.

Bongani Zungu is yet to get going, and isn’t considered a first pick or anywhere near it. He simply hasn’t impressed and is also a loan.

Glen Kamara may have been named as an unsellable but if a big enough bid comes in, he’s vulnerable. And we know there’s a tonne of interest there.

Ryan Jack has major injury issues and while we hope to have him back soon, his health, sadly, is unreliable.

And Steven Davis isn’t getting any younger.

In short, while we’re happy with what we have, we also have to plan for the future, and a lad like Hamer could be a very shrewd capture.

But he won’t be cheap, given his deal doesn’t expire for another 2 and a half years.

More as it comes in.
