Historically when one thinks of Portugal in football terms, it’s glowing. The country has won the Euros, they’ve produced three of the greatest players ever in Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Eusabio, and they have three of the titans of European football in Sporting, Porto and Benfica.

These sides have won 8 European trophies between them, with Braga being traditionally Portugal’s fourth team.

And yet over the past 12 months none of Braga, Benfica or Porto have managed to beat Rangers even once. Not once.

In 6 matches over 90 minutes, Rangers have won 3 and drawn 3, and two of those draws were having chucked away a two-goal lead.

In short, Rangers’ performances against Portuguese opposition, traditionally some of the strongest in European competition, have been absolutely world class.

None of them have been able to get the better of us, and the best any of them did was to give us a bit of a test in Porto.

No, Rangers’ European adventure isn’t an adventure any more – Steven Gerrard and his men belong at this level and higher.

And now we look forward to another last 32 draw, stunningly, as seeds.

Rangers are a side no one will want.
