Calls have increased recently from fans to see Swiss striker Cedric Itten given more of an opportunity in the first team.

Impressing on the recent trip to Poland, the former St Gallen hitman’s goal summed up what he is capable of, as did his stellar goal at Fir Park earlier in the season, and his movement, workrate, hunger and eye for goal got supporters’ attention big style.

Rangers have four main striker options. Itten, Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and Kemar Roofe.

Morelos’ form issues are well-documented, Defoe can only be used sparingly and isn’t a great target man, while Roofe works hard and is more tending to be deployed as a general forward.

For pure technical goal scoring and notable physique, Itten has certainly done a lot to shine since he joined.

He just hasn’t been given a plethora of opportunities, with Morelos and Defoe frequently selected before him.

Of course, it’s hard to argue with the manager’s method – Rangers’ form this season has been champion material, and the displays in Europe are up there with the best in the club’s history.

So while Morelos appears to be getting the manager’s backing much to the chagrin of some portions of the fanbase, as long as the club continues playing and winning like this it’s hard to dispute.

But equally we do wonder when Itten will get that chance to get a run of matches in there.

It’s something we’d really like to see.
