Rangers fans have overwhelmingly rejected in their droves the notion of signing Norwich’s Kenny McLean.

The midfielder, 28, was linked to Rangers strongly some years ago, but Aberdeen refused to sell to Ibrox for anything less than £3M, before shipping him south happily to the Canaries for a comical £200,000, and he had a pretty solid season or two in the Championship and PL.

Or did he?

Rangers fans in their definite majority certainly don’t think so in response to the story, don’t think he’s good enough for Rangers, and we’d have to agree.

He’s a very handy player for the level Norwich are at, and did himself no harm with a decent season in the PL, but Rangers have players of the quality of Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Bongani Zungu and of course Glen Kamara in his position so there are very few fans who would say hand on heart that he’s a better option than those four, to name only a quartet of the quality we have there.

No, there’s absolutely no doubt that while he’s not a bad player, and he’s now valued at the price the Dons tried to sell him for, he isn’t of the stuff to play for Rangers nowadays.

However, there’s a huge catch here – what if Steven Gerrard wants him?

Do all the McLean detractors, ourselves included, change our minds?

Well what happens then is we refer responsibility to the manager, that we overlook our own views and trust the boss.

But honestly, we’re not sure McLean would ever cut now at the level Rangers are at.

Still, happily proven wrong!
