Rangers fans were today left slightly bemused and a touch divided after media reports claimed Steven Gerrard is set to make a move for Scotland star and Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

The workhorse engine room man has been linked to Rangers for over three years, since the days where Aberdeen simply refused to sell him to Ibrox for anything less than about £3M, only to happily ship him south for only £200,000.

But those were the days when a player of that quality was certainly needed in our side, as opposed to today where Steven Gerrard has built his midfield into being the best in the land by a distance and McLean may not exactly match up.

Interestingly Ibrox Noise ran a poll on this months ago and the significant majority of you, before Rangers were as strong as they are now, did not want McLean in our side at all.

The most common argument was he wasn’t good enough and we didn’t need him, and if he wasn’t good enough for us when we were worse, what has changed in him to make him good enough now we’re a tonne better?

McLean is in and out of Norwich’s first team now, with only four starts in the league, but of course that’s in the second tier now and if he’s not clinched a starting berth there for Norwich is he good enough for Rangers?

Steven Gerrard demands incredibly high standards now, and we have to wonder if this story is just tabloid talk to get attention – Rangers are a very easy source of traffic and a tale like this will attract the punters.

But we’ll watch with interest.

  1. Based on current form there is absolutely nothing that makes this likely other than he’s a Rangers fan. I’m a Rangers fan and I’m free but it doesn’t mean they should sign me. Give it a miss unless he’s on a Bosman then maybe worth a punt.
