Why have no PL sides bid for Alfredo Morelos?

While our earlier piece on the latest piffle over Alfredo Morelos was laced with more than a touch of exasperation, it was also telling to consider the names linked with making offers for the Colombian.

It was the turn of Leverkusen and Stuttgart to apparently table bids, to follow Porto last week and the definite bids from Lille, and an earlier loan attempt by Marseille.

But all these clubs have one thing in common, and it’ll be one thing Morelos isn’t happy about at all:

They’re not English.

Morelos, from early 2018 onwards, was and always has been extremely vocal that the English Premier League was his destiny, his desire, his Promised Land, and where he really wanted to play.

And yet, despite mouthing off about that, and the constant lazy regurgitated names linked with a bid for the former HJK man, not a single one of those PL sides has actually done so.

Despite Newcastle, Everton, Villa, Palace, Leicester, West Brom and pretty much every bottom-half team being connected with a move for him, with just one week to go till the PL starts again, not a single bid.

However, before the timmies come in laughing and telling us it’s because he’s ‘sh*te’, clearly quality continental sides HAVE bid big money for him, and failed.

We have two theories why PL teams are not making a move (yet).

1: His disciplinary record is horrible. All those reds and yellows, and his general attitude has been poor.

2: He doesn’t speak English and in 3 years, has made no attempt to properly learn it.

So why are continental sides looking at him if he’s this ‘bad’?

1: Luis Suarez’ disciplinary record was absolutely vile, but Barca still fished out £75M to sign him. Continental sides are more amiable about signing questionable characters. After Mario Balotelli was finished in England, he still had European teams happy to take him on. If you have the ability and talent, they’ll figure ways of making it work.

2: If Morelos was to move to Portugal (Porto) or Spain etc, he’d find they speak his language. As for Germany, whether he’d bother to learn the native tongue we’re not sure.

But the point is sides in Europe are willing to make a move for Morelos, but PL sides are clearly a lot more cautious.

A kid, with a bad rep, with a bad attitude, and doesn’t speak English while getting sent off half the time?

We don’t know if Morelos will get his PL dream come true, but all we know is we want someone to buy him.

  1. You missed the most obvious answer. Generally English clubs don’t rate Scottish football and don’t see scoring 30 goals up here as a big deal. Having said that there are easily 5 or 6 teams that are screaming out for a goal scorer but would rather waste £20-40m on duds like Jolinton, Solanke, Benteke etc.

  2. It is because under the rules in England he doesn’t qualify for a work permit, and is very unlikely to get one. Therefore there is no point in anyone bidding as it is doomed to fail

  3. For a site that critical of papers and lazy journalism (which is even noted on the piece), you have failed to spot your spectacular “own goal”. They don’t speak Spanish in Portugal (Porto), they speak Portuguese! So Alfredo would not speak the language there.

    • John, we’re not stupid. We’re well aware they speak Portuguese. So does Alfie. That’s why Daniel Candeias translated English for him.
