Rangers fans might love this transfer story – if it was true…

When the Patrick Roberts to Rangers story broke, we had to laugh. If ever a tale had been manifested out of thin air to attract traffic, this was it.

From what we understand, some dodgy Twitter account came up with it, and some sites ran with it. That was pretty much the whole origin of the story.

It was used for traffic and hits and was then binned.

In truth, not a soul believed it, which is fair enough, because the story is just so preposterous. It exceeds the Joey Barton link for silliness.

Which is not to say Roberts is a bad player, but he’s a Celtic player. At least, a two-times loan that weirdly was never made permanent.

However, this is where it gets interesting. Nothing would wind Celtic fans up more than Rangers doing another Mojo and signing Roberts.

The guy plays in a position we do need support in, RW, and he’s certainly a fine player – Rangers have history for doing deals with Manchester City for wingers they don’t need, and Roberts is clearly surplus there.

Could Rangers sign him?

It would be incredibly bold, and his market value isn’t presently that great – he’d be less than £3M or even lower than that, and what a great signing it would be.

He’s a decent player, and it would wind them up!

Works for us.

If only it was even remotely true.

  1. I don’t care who it winds up but he’s not being doing it at a number of clubs in recent years and our record of signing wingers from Man City isn’t very good.
