Rangers today updated and finalised their Europa League squad to fly out to Gibraltar, and there were notable absences and puzzling inclusions.

Included, strangely, are the stricken Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun, Brandon Barker and Alfredo Morelos, while excluded are wingers Jordan Jones and Glenn Middleton.

While Steven Gerrard teased the notion Jones might still be part of the picture at Ibrox, this omission suggests that was just lip service – the NI winger just isn’t wanted or needed by this manager and the sooner he finds a new club the better for his career.

Glenn Middleton too was overlooked, and while the former Norwich kid has played no part this season, with the injury situation a little troubling at the moment he might have hoped to at least be on the flight, but like his NI colleague, finds himself rejected.

Gerrard is giving his injured quartet every chance of making the match day squad for Thursday’s clash but the omission of two fit wingers when we only actually have one fit one for the trip does rather say it all about the standing in which Stevie holds Jones and Middleton.

But hey, no complaints, because we’re winning and winning well.
