Greg Docherty has dropped a cryptic hint about why he didn’t make it at Ibrox, and why he wasn’t favoured by Steven Gerrard.

The-now Hull player, who’s been placed in central midfield interestingly enough, has spoken out a few times about how disappointed he was to give up his Ibrox dream, given just how much of a Bluenose he is, but revealed Steven Gerrard simply didn’t rate him and told him directly.

He said:

“I don’t have an answer for you, you don’t give me any reason to not [pick someone else],” which is a tough one to take because I’m thinking what can I do?”

In short, Gerrard didn’t consider Docherty good enough – in attacking midfield he has Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo, and in central midfield Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack, while defensive midfield boasts Steven Davis and Glen Kamara.

Gerrard, in his defence, was completely direct with Docherty – he told him to his face Docherty, in his opinion, wasn’t offering anything that gave him a pathway over any of the other first choices.

Do we agree with this? Regular readers know we were big Docherty fans and wanted to see him used, but then there seems to be a reason Docherty never got even a glimpse of the first team while for example Jordan Jones has now been given that chance.

Docherty is of course in League One and if we’re honest, his stats aren’t terribly good, but he’s playing CDM and that’s not really his position.

Either way, Gerrard just didn’t rate Docherty and told him.

At least he respected him enough to be direct.

  1. This was very much my understanding of the situation. . Having watched Docherty in pre-season last season I felt that there was better players ahead of him. Pure and simple. I still think though he could’ve been converted into a good attacking right back.
