Startling Gerrard admission might have fans bewildered

In a slightly startling admission, Steven Gerrard has confirmed not only is he seeking more ‘firepower’, but he still wants more midfielders too, and both positions are being potentially strengthened.

Speaking before the trip to Aberdeen, Gerrard announced more options up front are needed, which we have no concern with, but added that more was needed in the ‘engine room’ and that active work was being done there, which drops a major hint about South Africa’s Bongani Zungu.

This, we have to say, is a puzzling revelation.

In Rangers’ engine room we already have the biggest wealth of talent in our squad. Indeed, fans get exasperated when ‘another midfielder’ is linked, and when you look at the names we have already you can see why:

Glen Kamara, Ross McCrorie, Greg Docherty, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo to name but seven.

So Gerrard’s admission he wants more either suggests he’s not happy with the players he has, including four he’s signed himself, or that he’s utterly obsessed with midfield and just likes adding to that position. Which, given his own career, isn’t that shocking.

But the concern is adding players for the sake of it, and while this Zungu guy looks like he’s half decent, we’re not sure how much better he is than a Ryan Jack or Scott Arfield, in truth.

But, Gerrard will be happy with today’s performance and result, even if it wasn’t exactly sparkling, and will feel he has to build on that by strengthening the squad even more.
