Before we begin, this is not a witch hunt. We like Ianis Hagi a lot, and have been one of his biggest defenders in recent times.
But it’s plain to see that unless he plays properly central in the 10, he’s a wasted shirt.
Yesterday Hagi lined up as interchanging with Scott Arfield between the 10 and wide right, on a surface he absolutely can’t handle.
And it’s safe to say that while his display v Saints was actually fairly decent, his performance yesterday was agonisingly poor.
His passing percentage was dreadful at just 75%, and it was plain to see the surface was absolutely not for him. His selection was a big mistake, and if Joe Aribo wasn’t fit, there were other options Stevie could have used. Maybe a guy called Greg Docherty?
The point is there’s a growing issue with Hagi now – he’s being slaughtered after every match as not being good enough, with some fans saying he’s a waste of £3M.
And if Steven Gerrard is going to continue to mismanage him, then we’d have to agree.
Hagi is just pointless wide right, and useless on fake grass.
Combine the two and you’ve got a bad call, outright.
If we’re going to get the best of this potentially brilliant little player, he needs to be better managed.
The sooner the better.
