We’re just not sure what Steven Gerrard is playing at

We’re not quite sure how to start this piece off. We don’t want to be sceptical, negative or cynical, but on a day when another two kids from another two PL clubs are heavily linked with moves to Ibrox following Calvin Bassey, we have to say we’re now starting to deeply wonder what is going on.

Right now, these are not the summer enhancements Rangers need for winning the league.

Calvin Harris, sorry, Bassey, Rhian Brewster and Dennis Gyamfi (20, LB, 20, S, 18 RB) don’t sound like the kind of armaments this club needs to provide a sustained challenge to the SPL.

We would ask when Rangers became a lab like this for youth junk from other clubs, but clearly it started with Mark Warburton.

Of course, are we being harsh assuming they’re all rubbish?

But most of the feedback we’ve had over Bassey and Brewster isn’t positive – it’s of the same mind as ourselves – ‘another Liverpool youngster? No thanks’ etc.

Maybe it’s unfair, after all, we got Hagi a couple of weeks ago too.

But for the wider picture of the squad and of taking the fight to Celtic, players who are unwanted by Leicester or indeed most clubs globally generally won’t cut it at Ibrox either.

And the lack of experience is painful – 14 senior appearances between all three of them (and all of those are from Brewster) is honestly unacceptable preparation for life as a Rangers player. If we’re going to give youth a shot, why not our own?

Something just isn’t right here and we’ll have more on that today.
