Superb 44-cap attainable German star on a free – Stevie must move

There’s no denying Rangers need some quality additions, and one of the key areas we hear from our readers is that of central defence.

With Connor Goldson unfancied by some fans, Niko Katic’s Rangers future always uncertain, George Edmundson unproven and the same applying to Filip Helander, Rangers could use an experienced head to join the ranks, and frankly we could do a lot worse than 44-cap German international Benedikt Höwedes, who is a current free agent and frankly a world class player.

His career is a litany of the who’s who of great European clubs – Schalke, Locomotiv Moscow, and Juventus being the bulk of his time in the game, and at only 32, and not injured, Howedes would be an outstanding Bosman to pick up.

True, he will be courted by many suitors this summer, and Rangers might not be able to offer him the wages he’d look for, but he’s one Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson would be wise to enquire about.

The one thing we lack in defence is leadership and experience, and Höwedes has plenty of both.

46 appearances in the Champions League, and plenty of winners medals in Germany, Italy and Russia show what a top talent this guy is, not to mention the small matter of winning the world cup in 2014 for his nation.

True, his time in Italy saw the least number of appearances in a season in his career, yet he still won medals from it anyway.

The point being a top class German CB with many years ahead of him might be a brilliant acquisition for Steven Gerrard to make.

Would you like him?

Should Stevie move for Höwedes?
