Steven Gerrard may be ready to make big call on Niko Katic

If one Rangers player was more prominent in the video footage of the club’s return to Auchenhowie than anyone else, it was the heavily-featured Nikola Katic.

As we mentioned earlier, a number of players were more notably featured in the coverage than others, with the likes of Ryan Kent (yes, he was there, we boo booed), Jamie Murphy and Connor Goldson completely absent from the moving pictures, and only lightly included in the photo gallery, while the likes of Scott Arfield, James Tavernier, Glenn Middleton and Borna Barisic were heavily involved in the media footage of training.

But it was the major focus on our Croat colossus that we particularly noticed, with a hell of a lot of heavy featuring of him.

Is this a message from Steven Gerrard that the in-and-out defender is expected to be a regular this new term? Is it a sign he is finally to make his mark on the first team and stamp down a place? Of course, many would argue he already made his mark, then inexplicably lost his slot, which is on Steven Gerrard, for right or wrong.

But the extended coverage of the 23-year old does imply that he’s going to be a more significant part of the first team next season.

It’s really about time too – he has all the tools to be a top class defender, and Gerrard himself has admitted the giant Croat has to target his national team and join club colleague Barisic in being a regular.

And there’s no question he’s good enough.

A year older, a year maturer, Niko Katic surely must expect this season to finally be the one he becomes a Rangers stalwart, rather than a cycling fringe player.

But it’s down to Stevie – he has to decide if he’s ready to give Katic the place permanently, and going by the footage of him that might just be a yes.

Or, it’s set to be another frustrating season for Katic, and we might have to ward off more than just French FIFA manager gamers in the future.
